Charter Schools
Charter schools are tuition-free public schools (with campus-based and independent study options), and they have public-school responsibility to provide special education services per the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Most charter schools have waiting lists and lotteries for enrollment, so it is best to look into this option early on. Children are eligible to attend charter schools not located in their home districts. Visit the California Department of Education website to find out more. View charters’ websites, make phone calls, and schedule visits to see if the charter option is right for your child’s individualized educational needs.

- Each school district belongs to a Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA). The SELPA provides assistance to assure program availability to all students with disabilities. They have early infant programs for children less than three years of age, and special education classes for children age three and up.
- The districts also provide speech therapy, occupational therapy, parent training, and other related services. If a district does not have a service that your child needs, they will contract out to a county program, or pay for a private non-public service.
- The school districts are obligated by law to provide a free and appropriate education (FAPE) for a child with autism or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS).
- Note: Elk Grove, Sacramento, Folsom Cordova and San Juan are all single district SELPAs. All other districts constitute the fourth SELPA in Sacramento County. Other areas may incorporate multiple districts within their SELPAs.

CALIFORNIA EAGLES
The California Eagles (Special Olympics) program has been one of our most loved programs since its inception in 1986. This program annually brings over 100 young people and adults with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and other special needs or disabilities out to the golf course 25 weeks per year.
ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The students attending this class have physical and/or mental disabilities. They all have the potential to be productive adult members of our society. Through their lessons at school, in therapies and this program they are preparing to live as independently as possible, hold a job in the future and feel empowered to set and achieve goals for their lives.
SWING CLUB FOR THE BLIND
Each weekly outing includes nine holes of golf, preceded by a short review lesson in golf fundamentals given by a staff member of First Tee. During the round, each player is accompanied by a sighted volunteer who assists in lining up the golfer, and provides information about distance and direction. Play is alternate shot by the player and a volunteer. The club has averaged 15-20 players and 25-30 volunteers annually.
ELS FOR AUTISM
We have partnered with the Els for Autism #GameON Autism™ Golf program to provide evidence-based practices for teaching golf to people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The goal of the program is for participants to achieve their individual golf successes, build confidence and self-esteem, in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment.
